Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate is a Congregation founded in the year 1949 by late Msgr Joseph K.W. Thomas in Cherthala, which is commonly called “Greengardens” in the Archdiocese of Ernakulam, Kerala. Fr. Joseph was a diocesan priest of Ernakulam who felt drawn to radiate the compassion of Jesus to the poor Leprosy patients and he founded the Congregation with this aim. The congregation was raised to the Pontifical status in 1986.
It was in 1989 that the Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate, for the first time came to Nagpur, as per the invitation of His Grace, Late Leobard D’Souza, with a request to look after the mentally Challenged of the city of Nagpur. As it was soon after the bifurcation of our Congregation into 2 Provinces, we too wanted to have our Provincialate in the central India. We are grateful to God for having allowed us to have our Provincialate house here. The official inauguration of the Sacred Heart Province was on 14th November 1989 in a small old building in Mohan Nagar, Nagpur. On 4th October 1992, on the Feast day of our heavenly patron St. Francis of Assisi, the newly constructed Provincialate was blessed by our His Grace Late Leobard D’Souza. Rev. Sr. Celestine Francis was our first Provincial Superior.
Empowered by the word of God and witnessing to the values of Christ, to reach the perfect love, we the Assisi Sisters commit ourselves to be prophetic women like Mary our Mother, striving to build a universal family of justice, love and peace where the marginalised are integrated with dignity.
To empower ourselves by contemplating the Word of God in deep communion with the Eucharistic Lord. To commit ourselves to build up a universal family of peace, truth, justice and love following the footsteps of our Seraphic Father St. Francis To become like Jesus the Good Shepherd, we keep our preferential option for the lost and the least.
The consecrated life is a challenge; it demands a greater degree of love. Can we make a difference in the life of our own brothers and sisters in our society and enable them to be messengers of change in their mission?
